A MONTHLY LETTER TO READERS

LETTER NO. 14

The book I
nearly quit

FROM THE DESK OF

Iris Hallow

Writing from the coast, three chapters from the end

Hi Alex,

This month's letter is late because I put the manuscript down for three weeks and nearly didn't pick it back up.

I'm glad I did. The ending changed, and I think it's the right one now. It's quieter than the old one, and it took me a year to see that quiet was the point.

WHAT I'M READING

A keeper who talks to the ships

A slim novel about a lighthouse keeper and the people on shore he avoids. I won't name it yet. It's the other reason this letter is late: I read it twice.

I'll tell you the title next month, once I've stopped thinking about it.

A QUESTION FOR YOU

Do you read the acknowledgements?

I always read them first, before page one. Is that unusual?

Reply and tell me

Until next month,

Iris

P.S. Reply to this email if you want to argue about the ending. I mean that.
