THE RESCUE ISSUE
Hard month ahead.
Shorter days and dry indoor heat confuse even easy houseplants. A few small changes now help them through the dark months.
PLANT BY PLANT
One change for each
Monstera
Snake plant
Dusty leaves miss the weak winter light.
Once a month is plenty until spring.
Pothos
Fern
Cold glass drops leaves. Six inches back is enough.
Heaters dry the fronds. A tray of wet pebbles helps.
The rescue plan
Four changes for every plant in the house, most urgent first.
Cut watering by a third
Slower growth means slower drinking, even when the soil looks dry sooner.
Keep clear of cold glass
Six inches back is usually enough to stop leaf drop.
Wipe the dust off the leaves
Dust blocks light a plant is already struggling to get.
Hold off on repotting
Roots are slowing down too. Wait for spring unless it's an emergency.
QUICK DIAGNOSIS
Dropping leaves?
More than a few a week usually means light, not water. Move the plant before you change how often you water it.
