Author newsletter template: a letter to readers

A good author newsletter reads like a letter, not a catalog. This one stays in the first person, shares what you are reading and ends on a question, so replying feels natural and readers hear from you as a person.

Example subject line
A note from Iris, on the book I almost didn't finish

What's in this template

  1. Numbered issue line with an italic headline
  2. Author portrait with name and a one-line role
  3. Greeting and a personal note in 2 paragraphs
  4. Photo, then a light section about what you are reading
  5. Question for readers with the button: Reply and tell me
  6. Signed sign-off and a P.S.
  7. Reader quote and an outline button: Read past letters

When to use it

Monthly, or whenever you have something honest to say. Readers who signed up because they like you, and not only your books, will read it, so novelists, essayists and poets building a list between releases get the most from it.

Make it yours

  • Write the note in your own voice, and keep it under 150 words.
  • Name the book you are reading, or tease it the way the sample does.
  • Ask one real question, and answer the replies you get.
