Auto-upgrade: what happens when your list grows

Billing & plansUpdated

Auto-upgrade decides whether EmailFig moves you up a tier automatically when your list outgrows your plan, or blocks the send and asks you to.

Auto-upgrade, the toggle on Settings → Plan & billing, decides what happens when your contact list outgrows your current plan. On, EmailFig moves your subscription up and lets your send through in the same step. Off, EmailFig blocks the send and asks you to upgrade first.

With Auto-upgrade on

Two things trigger an automatic upgrade:

  1. You send something that would put you over your cap. EmailFig upgrades to the next tier and starts the send. If Stripe needs 3D Secure to confirm the charge, you’re redirected to verify, then come back and send again. If your card is declined, you land back on the campaign with the reason.
  2. Your list grows some other way, like a big import. Every night, EmailFig upgrades any paid account that’s grown past its tier, with no send needed.

A scheduled campaign that hits the cap upgrades the same way, but if that upgrade needs 3D Secure or the card is declined, there’s no one there to click through. The campaign reverts to draft and you get an email with a link to complete the payment. See Why sending is blocked.

With Auto-upgrade off

A send that would put you over your cap is blocked instead, with a banner reading “You’re over your plan’s contact limit. Upgrade to keep sending.” and an Upgrade now button that takes you to Plan & billing at the tier you need. Nothing happens until you click it, or your contact count drops back under your cap.

Auto-upgrade only affects moving up. If your list shrinks enough to fit a smaller tier, EmailFig moves you down automatically before your next billing cycle regardless of this setting. See How EmailFig pricing works.

Turn it on or off

Go to Settings → Plan & billing and switch the toggle on the Auto-upgrade card. It takes effect on your next over-cap send or nightly check; there’s nothing else to save.
