Set the subject, preview text and sender
Write a campaign's subject and preview text, choose who it's from, and set the sender every new campaign starts with.
You set a campaign’s subject, preview text and sender on the Setup step, in the Campaign details card. New campaigns start with your sending defaults filled in, so usually you only need to write the subject and preview text.
Subject and preview text
- Subject: the line people see in their inbox. The counter beside it counts up to 90 characters, about as much as most inboxes show. The subject can be up to 150 characters.
- Preview text: optional. The short line many inboxes show next to or under the subject. Leave it blank and inboxes show the opening words of your email instead.
You can personalise either with a merge tag (a placeholder for each person’s details), such as {{ contact.first_name | default: "there" }}, which shows “there” for anyone without a first name. See Merge tags: personalise with contact data.
You’ll see both on the Review step and in any test email you send.
Who it’s from
- From name: the name people see as the sender, usually your business or your own name.
- From email: must be an address on one of your verified sending domains. The hint under the field lists them, for example “Must be an address on yourcompany.com.”
Replies go to the From email, so use an address someone reads.
If you haven’t verified a domain yet, the card says “No verified sending domains. Add one first.” See Add and verify a sending domain.
Click Save to keep your changes, or Save & continue → to move on to choosing a template.
Set your sending defaults
- Go to Settings → Sending domains.
- Under Sending defaults, fill in Default from name and Default from email.
- Click Save defaults.
New campaigns start with these; existing campaigns keep their sender.
Your default from email is also where double opt-in confirmation emails come from. While a live signup form relies on it, it can only be changed to an address on a verified domain. See Set up double opt-in.
