Use tags to label contacts
Create tags, add them in bulk, from a form or from an automation, and send a campaign to a tag.
Tags are labels you put on contacts, whatever lists they’re on. Create one on Contacts → Tags with New tag. A campaign can send to a tag straight from its Audience card, so you don’t need a segment to reach tagged contacts.
A contact can have any number of tags. Tags don’t affect consent: tagging someone doesn’t subscribe them, and deleting a tag doesn’t unsubscribe anyone.
Create a tag
- Open Contacts → Tags and click New tag.
- Enter a Name and click Create tag.
Capitals don’t matter, so “VIP” and “vip” are the same tag. Each name can only be used once.
Add tags to contacts
- In bulk: on Contacts, tick the rows, choose Tag, type the Tag name, and click Apply. If the tag doesn’t exist yet, it’s created. See Bulk actions on contacts.
- From a signup form: a form can tag everyone who signs up (once they confirm, if the list uses double opt-in).
- From an automation: use the Add a tag and Remove a tag steps.
- From the API or a connected app. See Using the EmailFig API.
However a tag is added, it starts any automation that begins when someone gets that tag.
To take a tag off one person, open their page and click the × on the tag.
See who’s tagged
Click the number in the Contacts column, or choose View contacts from the row’s … menu, to see the contacts table filtered to that tag.
Send to a tag
On a campaign’s Audience card, choose Tags and segments and pick the tag. Everyone who has the tag when the campaign sends will get it.
To combine a tag with other rules, choose Create segment from the tag’s … menu. The segment builder opens with Status is Subscribed and Tag has your tag already filled in. See Build a segment.
Rename or delete
Rename in the row’s … menu changes the name. Segments, campaigns, automations and forms that use the tag update to the new name.
Delete removes the tag from everyone who has it; their other tags stay. You can’t delete a tag while a campaign, segment, automation or signup form still uses it. The message says what’s in the way. See Why I can’t delete this list or tag.
