Use tags to label contacts

Contacts, lists & segmentsUpdated

Create tags, apply them in bulk or from a signup form, and turn a tag into a sendable audience.

Tags are free-form labels you put on contacts, across lists. Create one on Tags by typing a name and clicking Add. To send to a tag, wrap it in a segment: the → Segment button on the tag’s row does that in one click.

A contact can carry any number of tags, and tags carry no consent meaning: tagging someone doesn’t subscribe them, and deleting a tag doesn’t unsubscribe anyone.

Create a tag

  1. Open Tags from the sidebar.
  2. Type into New tag name in the Tags panel and click Add.

Tag names are unique per account and case-insensitive, so “VIP” and “vip” are the same tag.

Apply tags

  • In bulk from Contacts: filter the table, tick the rows, choose Tag in the bulk bar, type the tag name, and click Apply. A name that doesn’t exist yet is created. See Bulk actions on contacts.
  • From a signup form: a form can apply tags automatically to everyone who signs up (on confirmation, if the list uses double opt-in).
  • From an automation: Add tag and Remove tag are automation steps, so a tag can track where someone got to in a series.

Find who’s tagged

The Contacts column on the Tags panel links to the contacts table filtered to that tag. The row’s menu has the same as View contacts.

Turn a tag into an audience

A campaign sends to lists and segments, never to a tag directly. → Segment on the tag’s row opens the segment builder pre-filled with “status is subscribed” and “tag has your tag”. Name it, save it, and it’s selectable on any campaign as Also send to a segment. Because a segment is re-evaluated on every send, the audience is whoever carries the tag at that moment.

Rename and delete

Rename on the row’s menu edits the name in place. Renaming is safe: segments, automations and forms follow the tag, not its name.

Delete removes the tag from every contact who carries it; their other tags are untouched. It’s blocked while something live still names the tag:

  • a saved segment with a rule on it,
  • an automation that starts when someone gets the tag,
  • an automation step that adds or removes it, or a condition step whose rules name it,
  • a live signup form that applies it.

The message names what’s in the way. See Why I can’t delete this list or tag.

Re-creating a tag with the same name does not repair anything that pointed at the deleted one. If you delete and re-add, fix up the segments and automations that used it.

Tag or list?

Use a list when the group has its own consent: people sign up to it, opt out of it, and forms point at it. Use a tag when you’re describing a contact you already have. See Contacts, lists and tags.
