Automation steps explained

An automation’s flow is a chain of steps, and there are only five kinds:

Step	What it does
Email	Send them a message
Wait	Give it some time first
Add a tag	Remember who made it this far
Remove a tag	Take a label off
Yes / no split	Send different follow-ups to different people

Each contact moves through the chain in order, one step at a time, until they finish it or exit early.

Add a step

1. In the editor, click the + on the connector where you want the new step.
2. Pick a step type from the menu.
3. Its settings open straight away: a small pop-up window for Wait and the tag steps, a full-screen editor for Email.

An automation can hold up to 50 steps; past that the flow tells you to split it into two automations instead.

Configure each step type

Email opens a full-screen editor (the same content editor a campaign uses, so designs and templates carry over). Set:

• Subject
• Preview text: “The line inboxes show under the subject.”
• From (the display name) and the from address, chosen from your verified sending domains only
• Optionally, start the body from a template via Start from a template…

Click Preview for a sample render, or Done to save and return to the flow.

Wait opens a small window asking How long?, an amount plus a unit (minutes, hours, or days). Waits can run from 5 minutes up to 180 days. The hint: “If you pause the automation, this clock pauses with it.”

Add a tag / Remove a tag open a window with one field, Which tag?: “Tags carry no consent of their own — they just label people.”

Remove a step

Click the × on a step’s card and confirm “Remove this step from the flow?” A step that has already sent to anyone isn’t deleted outright: its history is kept and it shows, collapsed, as a removed email still counted in your report.

Editing rules

Steps can only be added, edited or removed while the automation is draft or paused, never while it’s live. See Go live, pause, resume or archive.
