Why I can't delete this list or tag
A list or tag won't delete while something is still using it. Here's how to find what, and clear it.
If deleting a list or tag returns “Couldn’t delete name — …”, something is still using it and nothing was deleted. The rest of the message names what. Clear that, then try again.
What blocks a list
- A live campaign that targets or excludes it. Draft, scheduled, in review, sending, paused and failed campaigns all count (a failed campaign can be revised and sent). Sent and cancelled campaigns don’t block.
- A segment whose rules name it.
- An automation that starts when someone joins it, or a live automation whose steps refer to it.
- An import still working on it: one that’s running, or a column mapping started in the last day and not finished.
- A live signup form that adds subscribers to it. Point those forms at another list or archive them first.
Archived forms don’t block: they’re cleaned up with the list, and their signup records are kept.
What blocks a tag
- A segment whose rules name it.
- An automation that starts when someone gets the tag.
- A live automation whose steps add it, remove it, or branch on it.
- A live signup form that applies it.
Clearing the blocker
The message names up to three offenders (and says “and N more” if there are others):
- Campaign: cancel it, revise it, or change its audience on the campaign’s setup step.
- Segment: open Segments, click the segment, and delete or rewrite the rule that names the list or tag.
- Automation: shelve or archive the automation, or edit the step that refers to it.
- Import: let it finish, or finish the column mapping, from Contacts → Import CSV → Past imports.
- Signup form: open it from Grow and point it at another list, remove the tag, or archive the form.
Then delete again.
Custom fields work the same way
A custom field won’t delete while a live signup form still collects it. Remove it from the form (or archive the form) first.
Segments too
Deleting a segment is blocked while a live campaign is using it. A campaign that’s already been sent detaches cleanly.
Re-creating a list or tag with the same name doesn’t repair anything that pointed at the old one. If you delete and re-add, go back and fix the segments, automations and forms that referred to it.
