Why do people unsubscribe?

Reports & analyticsUpdated

Turn on the optional unsubscribe survey to see the reasons people give, broken down on both a campaign's report and your dashboard.

EmailFig can ask people why they’re unsubscribing, and show you the breakdown. It’s on by default. If you’ve turned it off, or just want to check it’s on, go to Settings → Unsubscribes, and under Options, check Ask for a reason (“Optional survey on unsubscribe — surfaced in reports and abuse signals”), then Save changes.

The Options section on Settings, Unsubscribes, with Ask for a reason ticked.

Once it’s on, anyone who clicks an unsubscribe link sees a short, optional survey on the confirmation page, with reasons like Too many emails, I never signed up for this, Not relevant anymore, This is spam, or Other with a free-text comment. Answering is optional: skipping it still unsubscribes the recipient and never delays the opt-out.

Where the answers show up

  • On a campaign’s report: a Why they unsubscribed card appears once that campaign has at least one response, showing each reason’s share of responses. A line like “4 of 8 unsubscribers answered” tells you what share of that campaign’s unsubscribers the breakdown speaks for. Free-text comments are listed underneath, with a link to export the rest.
  • On your Dashboard: a collapsed line under Recent campaigns reads “N unsubscribe reasons collected in the last N days”, account-wide across every campaign in your selected window.
  • In a recipient CSV export: the raw reason and comment are included as columns, tied to the specific recipient who gave them. See Recipient activity and CSV export.
