Why did my domain go back to pending?

Sending domains & deliverabilityUpdated

EmailFig keeps re-checking a verified domain. If its DNS changes, the domain drops back to pending until it verifies again.

EmailFig keeps re-checking a verified domain, roughly daily. So if something in your DNS changes and one of the four required records (DKIM, MAIL FROM MX, MAIL FROM SPF, or DMARC) stops verifying, the domain drops back to Pending, or to Failed if DKIM specifically breaks in a way SES treats as permanent. Sending pauses until it verifies again, and it usually comes back as soon as the DNS is put right.

The first time this happens, you get one email explaining that the domain “was verified before but has stopped verifying, so it can no longer send email,” pointing you at its DNS records.

What usually causes it

  • A DNS record was edited or removed, often as a side effect of unrelated DNS housekeeping (moving registrars or hosts, clearing out old records, a tool overwriting a zone file).
  • The DMARC record moved or was replaced at your organisation’s root domain. Since DMARC is checked at the registrable domain, not your sending subdomain, it’s easy to lose track of.

What to do

  1. Open the domain’s page and check the DNS records table against what’s actually published. Select Re-check DNS for an immediate check.
  2. If a record is missing or wrong, republish it exactly as shown. See The DNS records we generate and Publish DNS records at your registrar.
  3. If everything looks correct and it still isn’t verifying, email support@emailfig.com.

Until the domain re-verifies, campaigns and double opt-in confirmation emails that would send from it are paused.

If instead DKIM has permanently failed, the domain moves to Failed rather than Pending, and the fix is to remove and re-add it. See the Failed section of Domain verification statuses.
